When selecting an Alaskan Malamute puppy, the best advice I can give is make sure the kennel you select shows OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) certifications. The OFA will certify the hip, elbow, and a cardio quality of the puppy’s parents. These are three of the biggest health concerns with an Alaskan Malamute.
If you try to buy a deeply discounted Alaskan Malamute, the parents have no health certifications and your new pup may have a high risk of medical problems. The cost of OFA certifications is not insignificant, so any kennel selling discounted pups could not have possibly certified their breeding stock. If you buy a deeply discounted pup, and your Alaskan Malamute ends up with hip dysplasia, requiring $5000 worth of surgery, then you have saved nothing in purchasing a discounted Alaskan Malamute puppy.
On the other hand, there are several kennels out there that charge $2500 or more for an Alaskan Malamute puppy. Are these better quality Alaskan Malamutes? Never assume this. Some kennels charge ridiculous amounts and claim to OFA certify their breeding stock. If they can’t give you proof, they are lying to you. I've worked with families in the past, that have received Malamute pups from deceptive kennels. They paid extreme amounts for Malamutes that they had to put down in the first year. Families have literally called me in tears telling me terrible stories. Be very weary of breeders who cannot show you real certifications on their health certified Alaskan Malamutes. It's a waste of money and will turn into heart break.
Very few breeders take the costly precautionary steps to OFA certify their Alaskan Malamutes (waiting periods, fees, many vet visits, sterilization of substandard breeding stock).
If you look though our website you will notice we are the only kennel that provides a link to the official OFA database for each of our certified Alaskan Malamutes. Never trust a breeder who idly claims to OFA certify, you MUST ask to see their certification and numbers for each individual dog. It is appalling that other breeders will lie about this.
Also, never buy from a breeder that has varying prices. This just proves they know that some of their lines are unqualified to breed. Our Alaskan Malamute puppies are all $1200.
